Meet the bartenders, door staff, stage crews, and security team behind a night at Chilkoot Charlie’s—and the work of keeping a storied venue moving forward.
A night at Chilkoot Charlie’s might start with a band in one room, take a turn through another bar, and end with friends comparing which part of Koot’s they liked best. It takes people to make that experience work. Behind the music are bartenders serving several rooms, staff handling the door, crews preparing stages, and a security team watching how the night unfolds.
The people give each room its personality
That human work has long been part of the venue’s story. A 2019 Frontiersman feature focused on the bartenders who gave different rooms their own personality and made a friendly competition out of a familiar cocktail. Names and shifts change, but the point remains: guests remember the people they meet as much as the room they walked into.
Pitchfork’s 2021 profile likewise described Koot’s as a rare Anchorage space where local acts and touring artists can share the same sprawling venue. That variety depends on people booking performers, preparing stages, running sound, greeting guests, serving several rooms, and keeping a complicated night moving.
Recognizing the responsibility
Following the September 26, 2026 shooting near Koot’s, recognition of the team must also include the serious work of reviewing how guests enter, spend their evening, and leave. Management has described entry screening, ID scans, lighting, cameras, and a security patrol. Those reported steps deserve a fresh review, particularly around closing time.
No single measure eliminates risk. The team’s responsibility is to listen to concerns, respond clearly, and improve a plan when it needs improving. That includes looking carefully at arrival and exit routes, nearby parking areas, lighting, staff placement, rideshare access, and how concerns are escalated.
Keeping a gathering place worthy of its history
Koot’s has lasted since 1970 because people keep making it a place to gather. The best way to honor that work now is to let staff help shape the next steps and to show guests clearly what those steps are.
